Part 3: Association Study

You're correct. The Odds ratio is 1.36:

Cases

Controls

Risk allele

a

b

Other alleles

c

d

Odds ratio = ad/bc

G->A exon 4 substitution

AD patients

Controls

AG or AA

7

8

GG

31

48

Odds ratio = (7 x 48) / (31 x 8) = 1.32

95% Confidence Interval = .45 4.11

In this instance the confidence interval includes 1.  Therefore, the allele is not a significant risk factor for AD.

PARK2 looked promising, but there might be a better candidate gene.
